  1. - Making a paused player's actor smoke or hold his mobile shoe would mean they'd have to go fishing for animations again and you know how many are missing already... - No xenex, a player already sends his movement data along with everything else in each cycle. I don't see why transmiting some other special value instead of a movement vector would create as much an overhead as you predict there ("almost like a new player"). I mean he's either doing one thing or another. Dunno I could be wrong, but I don't think I am. - Substituting the coloured bars for a PAUSED text seems the best way to go about it to me. GG man (y). - Non-ingame players could either be displayed with a different colour, or font, or some other indication such as some specially reserved character or tag. Plenty of ways to do that, but in the end it's really not that crucial, rather just informative.
  2. If you have probs decoding a certain avi, it's probably a bad file. If you're getting fu,cked up results from encoding a movie with divx, it's probly something with your codec. Make sure you're not working with an unpopular or hacked version or that it didn't come from a bad codec pack. All of those things are common and none DivX's fault.
  3. I don't hate divx so I can't really vote for that either . Meh, that poll's problematic and stupid . For one thing that part about streaming went completely over my head. I've d/l-ed hundreds of divx videos and have been able to preview pretty much all of them while they were coming (ever heard of AVIPreview?). If you can't do that, it's most likely a problem with your setup than anything else and hardly a reason to bitch to us about. Story's the same with that "screen going green and performance dropping" part; never experienced such a thing myself or heard of anyone else seeing it either assuming this isn't about a messed up vid you were trying to d/l. I think you should check your players' up-to-date state, OS strain condition (background running apps?) and possible hardware antiquity before anything else though. What kinda PC you got anyway? Oh and make sure your divx pack was installed rightly too. If you're having problems with Ulead divx-encoding your work and previewing it, that doesn't mean it's so for everyone else. Anyway, as an alternative you could just save your edited work uncompressed and encode it with some post-(vid)-processing software like the very popular VirtualDub to overcome any problems. For the record though, the DivX codec series has been around for 6-7 years now and its been considered top quality vid compresion all throughout its evolving course. So you may hate away freely, but it won't change the mind of anyone that has really worked with it and seen the results. If you have something truely better to suggest, go ahead and share with us, but seriously now windows streaming? As far as XviD and WMV are concerned, they're both up there with divx quality and compression-wise. Lately it would seem that XviD is slightly better than any other codec in movies compression and quality delivery (slightly more crisp and clear picture than divx), but all 3 perform really good overall and exchange leading suitability roles only according to the nature of the source video as hinted before. It's really up to you to find out which one works best for your taste in the end.

  6. Hey IJ, I've seen tons of such artwork at deviantart.com. On another msg board I post, there's a dude called iProJecT and his avatars are always that way, so one day I checked where his sig's link led and it sent me to that site. Apparently there's a whole crowd that's into that sorta pixel art. So what the hell is it? And you wouldn't happen to know that guy, would ya?

  8. Long post... yet again . Well one thing that instantly comes to mind - just so we don't go completely overboard - is that most FPS games now are partly shaped by the demands and the feedback of online communities. I mean what other easier way of finding out what the market wants/likes could you think of other than hearing them out, talking with them on msg boards and forming your game accordingly? I think that's what has been done with UT2k4 and many other games lately and it's pretty cool they're finally giving gamers and their experience, comments and suggestions more weight. Anyway, back to SA. I'm with Kent on the prediction about an MP feature. The reason: Bump said it, plus why bother to develop extra functions, netcode and a ton of other things for an engine that won't ever be used again and for a game that wasn't even intended to pertain to the FPS category in the first place? SA only comes out because it has to; IMO the developers would rather start on GTA4 or something else right now than mess with the same code for the third time. And even if they did add it as a result of some pressure from above or something, I bet it'd just be a borrowed netcode thrown in n' coupled with some lame gameplay modes just to serve as an extra feature tick on the back of the box. I mean I do trust R* to put out a quality game, but at such a late point in the game and life of GTA (as we know it with this engine) it just wouldn't change anything. But just for the hell of it, assume SA does get MP. How will that help keep VC or GTA3 viable MP-wise or in any other respect? Answer's simple: it won't. It can't. The only people still messing with those games aren't R* employees, but the folks posting here. The MTA crew are trying to make a good stable mod for a pair of games that were never intended to be multiplayable and I don't see why anything any future GTA title might include would make 'em change their minds - or their goals. They're taking their time to make MTA solid (and rightly so if you ask me) and maybe they'll be playing GTA4 MP or whatever themselves too while they're doing that .
  9. Yup. It's the damn gnomes in your computer. Ok seriously now, there's a bit more to it than plain guesswork (interpolation) or just picking mid values for mid times and playing it by ear from there. Besides that wouldn't really be solving the problem; it'd just give ppl an illusion of smoothness at the cost of plainly misleading them with player positions that could very well be untrue. Anyway, blah blah blah, long subject... Netcode improvements are the best way to solve this and that's what they're gonna do with the next release(s) I think. Don't go there if you can't find your way back .
  10. In every pic I see xerox (25). Q: What's 25? Or 25 what? And why not 26 ? Anyway, good job on perfecting spectator mode. Don't really see why it has to have the cinematic cutoff, but overall I guess, it'd be cool to have. Finally we can make our vids of horrified lil children inside barrelrolling school busses screaming for help behind shattered bloody windows and... Ok, I'll just keep my thoughts to myself (for now). PS: Any other features you think are almost complete, feel free to showcast here. We won't mind. Really .
  11. On a related subject, some1 brought up a url of a site that listed several GTA/VC mods, etc not too long ago I think. Being a sucker for weird proggies, I was particularly interested in one that could show you where all the unfound packages for a savegame were, since it could be very handy with finding that elusive 100th package (I remember triple checking all 100 locations from help sites' package maps when I was bent on completing the game, but to no avail, so I stopped @ 98% ). Anyway, prob is the link was dead, or there was something else going on with it. So could anyone that knows of other such sites that might offer it point me there? Thx.

  13. - Exit offset change for ppl dying from heli-jackings maybe? - A few more armour pickups for cops. - Change the Sparrow back to its former white Mav self plz. In fact, kill a few of the slower & bigger box cars too for the sake of gameplay, i.e. getting around faster (Securicar, VCC spawn construction building, Ryton Aide PnS and docks boxcars, airport bus, bobcat etc upgraded to other better cars). Some1 also mentioned a taxi for the transportation services (obsessed) aficionados out there. - Crouch anim first and foremost & maybe a few more like vec enters, pillion jumps, chainsaw down walk, etc (I know they're tough to find, so I'm just hoping here). Be back with more when/if I remember some other good old suggestions. Edit (3/15/04): - Mols/nades chucking distance. - Objects "inertia" prob: players standing over moving cars, bikes in pickups, etc. - Right click aiming sync - A katana sword pickup (or two!) somewhere. - MTA servs could have a small data struct where they'd store players' roles ID. Each time a player would die and choose again as well as every 2-3 mins the client would send a packet with that info to the serv. Hopefully that should deal with the skins prob.

BTW as I've tried asking you before, can you plz help me with something in the GFX department? From what you've shown us, you seem to know your way around photoshop and hopefully it shouldn't take much of your time while you're working on your vid. Either way, glad to see ppl like trw makin vids again .

  21. Crash: If you wait a bit for Dr. Watson to create a log and finish (5-10 secs depending on the machine), you'll only have to press space, or enter once. If you don't want to wait, you'll have to press space or enter once to get rid of Watson and another time for the windows error to go away. Freeze: Quite rare and kinda hard to deal with, but you can work around one if you keep your cool and think a lil. - Pressing Ctrl+Shift+Esc (yeah I kinda hate Alt+Ctrl+Del-ing cause it's not as ... elegant ) will fire up the task manager in Win2000/XP's. Alt-Tab to it and also notice the order of the running progs; VC is usually the first and it helps to know. - From the task manager, you just have to change to the apps tab (Ctrl+Shift+Tab for me, since I always check the threads tab and notihng else) and then kill the frozen VC proggy by hitting home (selecting the first prog from the list) and then Tab and Space to highlight the End Task button and press it. You are now able to see the kill app window that comes up and you just have to press space once again. Now you're free to go to your still running MTA and fire up the game. Once again you've saved your session and didn't have to restart your OS . Erm, wait..... why am I getting that distinct impression some1 else has described this before me? Bah, whatever.
  22. Bump, cause this fokn pwns! Lol I've been so caught up with other stuff in this forum, I almost forgot to post about Smack's vid. Ok, this is the shit; both silly and creative to the point of addiction. Like Sam said, some very original stuff you've got in there and you can even keep a dude smilin all through that vid with your wackiness. Freaky spins, van wheelies (!), those wall rides and that awesome grind made it all worth the effort (and risk maybe) to play around with the Gang Burito's settings, stick to one setup and come up with such show-worthy stunts like you did. Music's pretty good, visual quality a tad average, length nice and reasonable, decent editing and like I said the material is really interesting; a quality production overall. "More twistin' that a tin can in a spring tornado"[/hic voice]. I'd urge every1 to see this (y). Seriously, go download it! Keep 'em comin Smackman .
  23. Didn't you ever see me using commas to get past the fokn post parser? Kinda wonder why they've installed one in the first place, seeing as this is a mod on an M-Rated game and ppl have to seek parental permission to register if they're under 13... Anyway nasty old habit I picked up chatting on WOL back in the golden RA2/YR times .
  24. Well I don't see why using cheats in SP should be so frowned upon. I mean after ppl finish a game they might want to experiment with some codes that do all kinds of wacky things; that's yet another part of the game and if you're anything like me for example since you've paid for your game, you'd sure as hell want to play it 100% through and through and that also includes cheats. Hell without them, you wouldn't have seen some vid's like Hunter's Big Bang and that other one with the coach tumbling in water and all sorts of silly things . You know, experiment with those things, get creative, get even more out of your game... Anyway, point is SP cheating is ppl's business and theirs alone. They don't bother any1 else, so there's no reason for any1 to be calling them cheaters in any bad sense of the word. Some even use them to make their game more hard than normal. BTW you ever did any modding to RA2 or YR?
