  1. Making an XBOX MTA would be more trouble then it is worth, especially when you have to hack a Microsoft product to do it. Microsoft may have products which suck, but they have lawyers that certainly don't.

    Network Status

I think it is just some fans' way of "giving back" to the MTA community. Btw, you chose a bad network to move your IRC channel to, as a friend of mine put it: "Gamesurge goes up and down like a Chinese whore on speed." In other words, Gamesurge has netsplits every few minutes, and more netsplits after recovering from these netsplits.
  3. There is this Internet cafe in town which some friends invited me to one day. I didn't really want to come because I had a good PC and internet connection at home, but my friends insisted. I played TFC and a little UT2003, and in the middle of a game, an employee came over and told us that a group of people were coming in who had reserved the computers, implying that we had to get the fuck out. I was bored, so I decided to call it quits. I got up and just as I reached the dining area, I saw this mass of whiny kids come in and begin to play Counter-Strike. These were some of the stupidest kids I had ever seen; these were the morons who could not spell or type a single sentence without using some kind of acronym, the 'OMGWTFLOL!!1111!" kids as I like to call them. Some of the amazing phrases I heard were "Stop cheatin' you fuckin' cunt!" and "You cheatin' homo!" (No offense, just telling it like it is). Let it be known that I live in Tennessee, the heart of the Great American South, the Bible capital of the universe. I think you follow me. There is no word to describe how much they sucked at the game. So what's the real lesson in all this? Yup, I don't know either.
  4. PS2 online play has definately taken off because of games like Final Fantasy XI. I'm sure Rockstar has been watching FFXI, and I bet that as a result they may introduce multiplayer earlier than expected.
  5. If that is the case, then I must have been playing an evil ripoff of MTA 0.3, because the miniguns still existed. I ran into at least two cheaters every time I played the game, and these were real cheaters; what they were doing was too bizarre to be considered bugs. Btw, this was not just my opinion because I often played with at least three other friends. Other players in the server were also complaining. On top of that, some players in the server were just plain stupid because they were asking people how to acquire the cheats.
  6. The cheating makes the game not fun. It isn't fun when someone warps across the map, guns you down with a minigun, and does it again immediately after you have respawned. It is even worse when this person is invincible. The worst part is this happens on every server. As you said so yourself, no one would play if it wasn't fun.
  7. For Linux, you will have to get the file from http://www.mtavc.com, untar it, edit mtaserver.conf, and run the binary. For the sake of convenience, you might find it better to create a shell script and use screen to run MTAServer.
  8. Whatever is done, I hope it is done quickly. This problem has gotten completely out of hand, and it should have been dealt with a long time ago.
  9. Installed at MTA 0.1, uninstalled at MTA 0.3. The large amount of cheaters and the MTA Team's lack of effort to stop them prompted me to uninstall the game. I still check back here to see if things have improved.
  10. No, Frame Limiter is not cheating. The Vice City game itself lets you do it; it is not a setting that is enabled illegally. It is merely meant for the optimization of graphics by increasing the frame rate. There really is no reason to consider it cheating. I don't think I need to remind you how imperfect MTA is; you know by now that there are many factors which effect player speed. If someone is going faster than you are, too bad. If someone is crossing your radar in less than a second, be concerned
  11. Why would someone cheat on a game that isn't worth cheating on? The point of the game should be the challenge, not winning. And regarding viruses, JonChappell is correct in saying that many new viruses utilize Windows vulnerabilities. MSBlaster, anyone? That seems to be becoming the new trend because there is little someone can do to defend against those except stay behind a non-Windows firewall and constantly update Windows. I think that the e-mail viruses which use "Social Engineering", or conning, are becoming a thing of the past. Nonchalantly neglecting these new viruses is not a good idea.
  12. The disadvantage is that Macs are rediculously expensive. They are the "Cadillacs" of personal computers as my dad likes to call them. However, a Mac is worth every cent of what you pay for it. You are definately getting a high quality computer if you buy a Mac. It isn't all bad, though. The Mac platform has attracted the attention of a lot of coders, so there is some pretty good freeware available for the Mac and more coming out every day. The gaming isn't so strong yet, but it is getting there.
  13. "there isn't enough room for memory addresses" This has gotten rediculous. Why is the MTA Team making so many excuses and saying that some of these suggestions which seem possible are not? MAC Address banning, better anti-cheat, is it really so much to ask? And if it is, shouldn't the MTA Team be prepared to deal with these suggestions in a positive way? Multi Theft Auto has gotten very popular way too fast, and I don't know if the MTA Team is prepared to deal with this. The concept of Multiplayer GTA was laughable prior to the release of the very first MTA version, and yet we now have a working mod. So why is the MTA Team telling us that so many things are impossible? Aren't they the ones that did the impossible? Why can't they do it again? I am very disappointed at how pessimistic some of the team members are being. Either way, keep it together MTA Team and hang in there.
  14. hehe, it seems that running a server has become a babysitting job.
  15. Your best bet would be looking in the MTAMA Scripting section under Add-ons. Unfortunately I don't know of any good admin programs for Linux
  16. Easy solution to cheating: Make MTA very difficult to play. I have learned after a lot of observation that the more complicated a game is, the less cheaters there are. And I have noticed that the majority of cheaters in MTA cannot type anything that is in anyway comprehensible, so making MTA a harder game to play may very well eliminate the problem. Right now there is no definite structure to an MTA game, and even though it is a nice feeling to have the ability to do anything you want to, this no-rules structure serves as a breeding ground for cheaters. I have noticed that a lot of people think nothing of cheating, and it is this way of thinking that makes more people start to cheat. After all, there are no rules, right? Who can say what is right and wrong? Who cares if you get banned off of a server? There are, afterall, many others. I am not asking for Counter-Strike style play, where it is just mindlessly pointing and shooting. There needs to be a real challenge in playing, and getting a single kill needs to be a major accomplishment, something that is earned by knowledge rather than luck. What I am trying to say is that to the players, how you do something should be more important than what you do. It should be boring to cheat. Well hopefully you get what I'm talking about, and I hope that the MTA Team makes the right decision.

    I CANT TALK!!!

You would be better off closing the Chat Box. No one has anything to say that is worth listening to. IJs: I demand more Tiesto.
  18. Mac is the only good graphical implementation of unix. It has a great window manager, and the tcsh (I think) shell underneath. Plus the software for Mac is excellent, and many files are compatible with Windows. And more Mac games are coming out; they just released Unreal Tournament 2004 for Mac, and I'm hooked. Hopefully they will release Vice City for Mac someday. I wish the world would just scrap Windows, such an infinately inferior operating system :-/

    Realistic MOD

I know of an excellent realistic mod. It's called the real world. It is available for free, and you can get it by getting up and going outside. And you can switch off the engine in your car, too Seriously, though, I don't know of any realism mods, nor do I think anyone is going to make any. Isn't the whole point of video games to get as far away from reality as possible? Heh, I can see it now, a investment video game. "Watch out for inflation! Hurry! Sell your bonds before interest rates rise!"
  20. I recall Indiana Jones finishing off some scimitar-wielding thugs with his revolver in Raiders of the Lost Ark.

    Lagger

Be sure to run spyware and virus checks on both of your LAN computers. Even though your LAN may be quite fast, if both of your computers are being bogged down because of processes, then it is very possible that you are experiencing a choppy game.
  22. Get rid of all the windows. How are you supposed to use mIRC while having that much junk open?
  23. Then why are you on the MTA Team if you are going to whine about how much work you have to do? Effective Anti-Cheat is a very necessary thing, and if you can do it, then please do. This is much better than putting all of your faith into the miracle 0.4 core.
  24. Unfortunately, you will need a Windows-only admin tool to ban people. There is command-line in the server program or a text-based unix admin client yet. You can get it in the MTA downloads section. To use it, you will need to enable Admin Server in the server program. See the config file for that.
