If you restart it, does it crash again?

It is borderline impossible to create 1 package that will work on every linux. The MTA server has a lot of dependencies that have to be met and the versions of those debs is different on different distributions. A server compiled on the latest ubuntu for example will not work on Debian 4 or could even refuse to work on the last LTS version of Ubuntu. In the future we hope to be able to breng distribution specific packages (like .deb for debian/*buntu, rpm for RH/F/CentOS, ...) and maybe set up our own repo to allow people to install and update with a package manager.

Why do they even localise these kind of tools. I never would want an error msg like that to be translated. This one fortunatly is generic, but more specific ones would make it a lot harder to find help on the internet. Anyway back to the problem. It would be nice to know what distro this is on, but as Sebas pointed out, make sure you have all the dependencies installed. kevinwalter, debian 5 e.g. includes libcurl4 with ssl while debian 4 has libcurl 3 without ssl i beleive. In case of debian 5 (and maybe recent buntus as well) you will need libcurl4-openssl-dev instead of libcurl3-dev

DazzaJay, while GTA IV is coming with SecuRom (even the Steam version) it has much less restrictions than other recently released games with it. Yes it requires online activation but does not require an active internet connection after that, online registration can even be done from a PC where the game is not installed on. It also allows for an unlimited amount of reinstalls so that should not be a problem either. Ppl who say they will now download the game isntead of purchasing it just because of Securom are stupid and in the end responsible for destroying an industry, or at least a platform.

I can not comment on the history behind the story, but i can say that we never had access to the source code of SA

Do you really think it is that easy? First you need to find a system or develop it yourself and then you still need to implement them. People who are not involved always take things for granted and think something can be done in just a couple of hours. However in reality things take time. And if we implement it for DP2 then people will also want it for Race, if we do it for race the ppl that play 0.5 will want it and if we do it for 0.5 the ppl who play 0.2.2 will want it as well.

Just as if it is that simple. We didn't get any advanced warning, we found out the same way as the rest of ASE users. That gave us 6 weeks and you expect us to develop a new system and then people expect us to develop a new system and implement it in all our past versions within that timeframe.

For 5 years now we have been using The All-Seeing Eye (ASE) as a master server system. ASE was a commercial server browser system for multiple games. A couple of years ago Yahoo! took over ASE and 2 months ago they decided to end the service, basicly shutting down our master server system. Because of this all MTA versions at this moment have an empty server browser. DP3 will be using a new master server system. For the moment you will need to use Game Monitor to find servers.

:Rob, I can tell you that a lot of people who have worked with kye in the past have seen this coming for a long time. I myself am surprised that it didn't happen sooner. The DDoS attacks are not what ended SA-MP, all they did was push it over the edge.

We can handle a lot of problems and we are resourcefull when it comes down to surviving. But major DDoS attacks can take anyone down and will in the end cripple us just like SA-MP. Yes we have lost money in the past to DDoS and lost a server to it. If DP3 leaked then so be it. We try to contain our test versions as much as possible. Just like sa-mp 0.2.5 people can't set up or use their own servers. It's the only thing we can do. Things like cheating and hacking are a problem in any game. It doesn't matter if you make something for free or play big games like Battlefield or CoD, cheaters and hackers everywhere. All we can do is try and limit it as much as possible.

The money they asked for was intended in the first place for keeping the services running, but the income would have been higher then that. It would have been legal, the only error he could have made if he had continued was not entering it in his taxes. And yes, we have searched for ways to get some income ourselfs in the past, we did enough research but never continued with it.

[personal mode]Darklight, I do not see this as good news. It is sad to see how some people can destroy the hard work of others just because they don't agree with how things are handled. We have had our share of problems before and I can tell you it is not fun. While at times we have had major differences with the SA-MP team and Kyeman we always tried to respect them. They gave us something to combat against, something for us to tackle. Now that aspect is gone. In the +5 years we have been active we have seen a lot of competition from a lot of different mods, SA-MP was the only one that could rival us and in some aspects even do better then us (hey, I still have my pride ) @C3, if I ever see a post like that again you will be banned from these forums.

Have you tried the debian or suse build, and if they failed, what was the error?

The problem with the steam versions of GTA is that they are patched and have a new version number. Our software checks that version number but does not know it since it is not in the list.

As some of you may remember (I doubt it to be honest) Multi Theft Auto started 5 years ago. On February 9th 2003 IJsVogel released his little piece of software into the world and a day later it got picked up on some smaller forums. Since that time a lot has changed, the game evolved, the team evolved, our community evolved and our mod, well ... you can compare dp2 to am01a if you'd like but I know what I would prefer. We dug up the original web page (unfortunatly the original hosting went down a couple of months ago) for all those newbies here to see where we started. Those of you who understand Dutch can also have a look at the original forum thread on GoT. If you want to see our history, have a look at our old wiki or visit the apps, media, and web archive. And now, tell me. What was your favorite (personal) moment in the past 5 years?

The installer also calls home to us. It is possible it is a false positive. And on a sidenote : AVG isn't really a good AV solution

For the seventh time : the debian release is the generic release.
