Aeron
0.333... = 1/3 3 * 0.333... = 3 * 1/3 0.999... = (3*1)/3 0.999... = 1 c = 0.999... 10c = 9.99... 10c - c = 9.99... - 0.999... 9c = 9 c = 1 Thus, 0.999... = 1 http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/0.999 Link to comment
Gamefreek
We learned about that in 9th grade lol Link to comment
Jigga
I knew that since primary school. Link to comment
gooch
the only flaw is that infinity never ends, and 1 does so they arnt the same Link to comment
paul527
well, .3333.. is equal to 1/3 and .6666.... is equal to 2/3 so why wouldn't .9999.... be equal to 1? Link to comment
MrJax
well, .3333.. is equal to 1/3 and .6666.... is equal to 2/3so why wouldn't .9999.... be equal to 1? 0.3333.. is not equal to 1/3 You can't represent 1/3 in a plain number, its infinite. It just makes it easier to ignore the fact that they're different. Link to comment
Jani
That's why I prefer finite numbers Link to comment
Ransom
I could swear this exact same conversation came up somewhere in the MTA world... long, long ago. Punch .999999..... into a TI calc and you'll get 1. Its retarded math like imaginary numbers and stuff I guess we just aren't allowed to believe each numerical representation doesn't represent that exact value. Its just like, for example, how a number can be infinitely small. .0000..........1. You'd have to think logically that there has to be only a certain amount of space between 1 and 0. Crazy stuff. MTA Team Blokker_1999 Posted January 1, 2007 MTA Team Share Posted January 1, 2007 sure, i posted it in #mta some time ago, that prolly why Aeron put it up here . What they try to proof here is not that 0.999999999999 == 1 but that 0.9999 followed by an infinite number of 9s == 1. 0.33333... isn't a plain number, it is a never ending number, but it does equal 1/3. so 0.99999 (going on to the end of times) equals 1 . Infinite is strange cause infinite - 1 == infinite again. Link to comment
paul527
0.333... = 1/33 * 0.333... = 3 * 1/3 0.33333... isn't a plain number, it is a never ending number, but it does equal 1/3. then 0.3333.. is not equal to 1/3You can't represent 1/3 in a plain number, its infinite. It just makes it easier to ignore the fact that they're different. i said 0.33333... is equal to 1/3 , was i wrong? i just want things to be clear, i got nothing agianst Jax Link to comment
