GF-FX line = DX9.0 (which is arguable because of the recent event of 16bit floating point, which would make it a non-compliant card)

GF3, GF4Ti line = DX8.0 (not DX8.1 because of lack of support of Pixel Shader 1.4)

GF4MX, GF2 line = DX7.0 (lack of pixel shader spec)

For all GeForce Vid card users you should download the newest drivers!!!

New drivers have come out recently, adn I got a 10% increase in FPS when I installed them!!!!!

Also you should try to update your BIOS. That will make things start up quicker. Update your AGP drivers also if you can!!!!

the new drivers are aimed at high end Ti cards (4600/4800) and the new FX5800 chipset. Dont bother updating if you are a MX/Ti4200 user, makes no difference whatsoever :P

Nonsense, a Ti 4200 is the same chip as the Ti 4600/4800 if it helps the Ti 4600 or 4800 it will help the Ti 4200 to. You are correct in saying that these drivers are especially for the Geforce FX detenator 41.09 is the last Geforce 4 optimalisation. Now watch our expensive cards die.... :(

it might be the same chipset, but lower .ns. mem, lower clock speeds, and if you aint a 128MB user, obviously, lower mem. and um, i did actually benchmark the new dets, not really any difference, benchmark scores were almost identical.

My spec is:

AMD Athlon XP 2100

512 MB DDR RAM

16x DVD

32x CD-RW

Geforce MX 420 (The only let down with it!)

80 GB Hard Drive

17" Monitor

Windows XP Pro

If anybody is getting a new PC get AMD processor, because they are better and cheaper than P4 :P. They also seem to run GTA 3 better too.

a gf2mx400 strugles running gta3 - i hate to think what it is like running the next "big" game. And gf2 cant run it at full performance, you have to disable a lot otherwise the game goes sllloooowwww =)

Yea, don't get a MX card what ever you do, if you can afford to buy a new PC, then you can afford to do better then an MX. Especially a GF2. And no, you can't run any current game with one, not playable anyways. Try playing Splinter Cell with a GF2 MX. Even a Ti GF2 has problems with that game. At least get a GF3, preferably Ti, you can get those for real cheap on eBay or Pricewatch.com

sorry im half a year late, had to comment...i have a gf2 mx and splinter cell runs fine.....actually it runs better than gta3 :?

15" screen

Harmon/Kardon sound

This is what I have:

Shit onboard 32 MB S3 Prosavage thingy

WD 40GB HDD

Liteon 48x12x48x CD-RW

Another onboard sound

Mouse <---- with two balls

Keyboard

Some speakers I ripped off my old IBM

So basically, GTA3 runs a bit slow but I'm getting a video card soon, but Jedi Outkast runs fine.

I've got two games rigs which I also use for work (hardware journalism):

Pentium 4 3066Mhz (Northwood 'b')

1Gb Corsair DDR400

ASUS P4G8X (Granite Bay)

NVIDIA GeForce FX 5800 Ultra

Sound Blaster Audigy 2

Pentium 4 3000Mhz (Northwood 'c')

1Gb Corsair DDR400

Intel i875PBZ Motherboard (Canterwood)

ATI Radeon 9800

Sound Blaster Audigy

at 1280x1024 on either things are still occasionally choppy with all the car mods and engine tweaks I've installed, but it looks the biz :D

 16 bit floating point?

I take it you mean 16-bits per channel? as opposed to claiming that the NV3X family actually only does 16-bits FP instead of a full 128?

The hazards of talking on topics you're not entirely aware of I guess - the GeForce FX is actually more accurate than the Radeon 9500/9600/9700/9800 - ATI only does 96-bits, rounded to 128-bits at the end while NVIDIA offer a true 128-bit and intermediary 64-bit (if developers choose to use it) which has certain performance benefits (and is still an improvement over the IQ of DX8 shaders)
