I reckon it's one of three things:

1) It's actually a "free" server, but really expensive so you end up paying for it through the cost of the phone call

2) It's a "hilarious prank" and it turns out to be a sex line or something

3) Another "hilarious prank" would be if it were one of his "mates", to piss him off, or some random number, just for a "laugh".
