Whats a good band width to host a server

Ha ha, no way. I wouldn't suggest hosting a high player-count server on a home connection as ISPs tend to limit your upload rate which is important for a server. You could host a low player-count server with a broadband connection though - a 128k upload rate should be ok for that.

i just want to know is a 56k a good band width to host a server?

You could, but it is crutial for atleast the server to have a fast connection. I could have a T1 connection and connect to a 56K server and have a high ping :?

By the way, are you the Hunter I used to know back in the day? Or are you another Hunter?

Good band is probably 10mpbs+

wow where can I get that kind of service? Is that only download speed and you get a terrible upload spead? I have a 4 mbps connection, but I think my ISP puts a little bit of a slant on that number. Maybe 4 mbps on a microsoft server :P

btw Japan has a 1 gbps connection :S I think i'll move there 8)

correction, microsoft has a large fiber backbone, around 13gbps as far as i remember.

yes, japan offers 1gbps direct fiber for a considerably low price, probably what the UK or USA residents would pay for a 10mbps connection.

a good upload rate would be 1mbps, but residential cable/adsl connections tend to only offer upto half of that.

if your serious about home hosting, a good connection to get would be maybe a 1mbps or 2mbps SDSL line.

opium, a 10mbit upload is easy enough for a single server, when 3 of the servers on my dedi box were full ~20 players each, the bandwidth graph only reported 4mbps of upstream bandwidth usage. and its on a 100mbps connection.

I'd imagine that they'd be expensive because they're designed for businesses. But can't ADSL only go up to 2 Mbps at the present time anyway? (which they're working on improving)

I dunno, I got ADSL and its 1mbps for like $55 (yes nasty I know but theres no other hope in the country, im goin back to the city for college soon), it only actually gives me about 250-500 lots of times I think.

You got royally screwed there. You should get cable because it's a dedicated digital line and it's not limited quite so much as ADSL, although ADSL has the advantage that more ISPs offer it so it should (in theory) be cheaper.

If you live in a major UK city, 8mb is now avaliable from certain companies (Bulldog,UKOnline) being the 2 i know of.

If I recall correctly, Bulldog internet is intended for businesses and so you only get 8Mbps at certain times of the day. This is a policy that they've had for a while but they might have changed it.

You should have atleast 10 mbit if you wan't to host your own server? Use IIS or PWS if you want to script in ASP, or use a freebsd or a linux system if you want to host PHP, The both things are same shit just ASP is much easier to understand. Och det vet du!

where can i get em from

IIS is included in Windows Server operating systems, it can be activated on Windows 2000 Professional and Windows XP Professional in the Add/Remove Components menu.

Edit: wait, this thread is a year and a half old. WTF :?
