DAMN somehow my GTA: SA doesn't work ( tried it on 3 ps2 a V1, v8 and another v8 all clean)

The game loads and i play it , and if i do something ( like grabbing a bike ) my screen freeze and then it says: error reading the grand theft auto: san andreas disk.

I got the Game legal and the disk doesn't have one scratch on it, and my ps2 hase no modchip or other stuff and other games don't have problems.

Does anyone else have this problem 2?

  • 3 weeks later...

A lot of people seem to have problems playing SA on ps2, including myself, it is said to be a problem with the laser. The SA-disc makes the laser go up and dow very, very fast, and I was told it is the oil that enables the laser to move, that dried out.

So I mailed PLaystation-tech support, but their answer was no good, so I searched some forums, and there is a guide on how you can repair it yourself. I will try that next week probably and I will post a walkthrough for all people who want to do this themselves.

My old PS2 died of DRE. Lots of people lost theirs that way eventually. Even those that take great care (like my cousin, whos also died). They made a cheap, crappy product. Then they improved them, maybe it was a secret plan to make you buy two, who knows.

GTASA has a lot packed into it, the framerate is sorta slow so its loading lotsa stuff all the time, I'd just say only the new PS2s are capable of handling the game. Early, used PS2 versions probably will come up with DRE or freezing.

*DRE = Disc Read Error

Yep I was fearing my PS 2 might fail on San Andreas, so far I've replaced it once and probably got a newer model. It glitched in some DVDs and I think I took good care of the console, but they seem far to vurnable. Must've been killed when my cousin ran into the controller cable and dragged it around on the floor :P

It works fine though

after using some cd cleaner there was no probs you should try it out

btw luckily I didn't have to cash out for a new console, the guarantee got me a new one :D

well, my SA died on my PS2 a few days ago too :(. it worked fine for a couple of weeks, but started getting DRE's, more and more frequently, and now i get one after just a few minutes of play. i took very good care of my SA too, but somehow it has a couple of very small scratches toward the outside of the disc.

i have a SCHP-30001 V4 PS2, which is a few years old. this is the first time ive heard that the problem was caused by a lack of oil in the laser mechanism. please post the site where you got this, it might just fix my problem.

until now i was pretty much out of ideas.. i just cleaned the PS2 out: cleaned out all the dust with compressed air, rubbed the laser off with alcohol, messed with the white gear that adjusts the positition of the laser, and still, my SA gets DRE's after just several minutes of play.
