Can I set up a game over LAN?

Can this be done with MTASA or the is mod only for online servers? If yes, how?

It works on lan too, just setup the server like normal and connect to the computers lan ip

You mean there has to be a 3rd computer to run the dedicated server on in order to have two player lan game.

Can you give me a hint how to set up the server or direct me to a page where I can read it?

it can run on one of the workstations that are running the game aswell, just connect to localhost (127.0.0.1) on that workstation

Now, I started the server on my machine. Then started mtasa and when I tried to connect to 127.0.0.1, I got a "protocol error" ( 8 ) message. The server screen shows I've entered and quit the server.

What's wrong? I don't have any kind of firewall or even an antivirus software.

It can happen you have writen something wrong in the modife file... But wow no antvirus or firewall O_O. Dont send me files then!

Actually I managed to connect at home to a server on the same machine, but I can't do it at work. Could it be because we've replaced a lot of the vehicles in the game and edited the conf files?

Yes, modded games are picked up by MTA's anticheat. Reinstall and try with that. If you want to keep your mods, you can always have 2 installations of the game - one with mods, one without.
