MTA in the news

SugarD-x

Question

We all know MTA was on t.v., but what about Slashdot? Yep! In fact, Slashdot liked MTA so much, they linked to another whole article about it!:

What happened to those days guys? Bring it back. Make the news again. Impress the gamers and let them relive the good times. If not, at least let your fans have a way to do that themselves by open-sourcing the older GTA 3/VC (0.5/0.6/Blue) versions, just like you did with MTA:SA. It's only fair... :)

Ed Lyons: We believe that the new core, which is written from the ground up, will give players a multi-player experience that goes way beyond what we offer now and have offered in the past. Writing the new core gave us the opportunity to totally re-think the way multi-player should be implemented, and allowed us to include hundreds of features that have been asked for by our community ever since our first release.

*Sigh*...

Edit: Oooohhh snap!:

Blue is already open-sourced - that's what MTASA is built on. Moreover, using its source you can work on porting it to your beloved games like GTA3 or VC - now that's what would be really useful and approved by us.

Open-sourcing 0.x would make as much of sense as Microsoft o-s'ing the latest Win7, then a year later Win98, which is not really used in modern tasks anymore since several years, and it's certainly not a subject to change no matter what.. And would steal yet more precious time which could be spent into development of the latest version instead.

But if it would just come to updating 0.x's server browser (+/- other small updates) - then maybe, as it doesn't have a newer equivalent from us. You can be sure though that this WON'T HAPPEN (if it's ever going to happen, that is) before MTASA 1.0 public release.

Oh yes, as for your quote I find it like a description of what MTASA 1.0 is. And like mentioned above, most likely possible to have this in VC/gta3 as well - so that's why we'd rather encourage you guys to port it to those games instead of messing around with the dead core.

Also, these stats are reasonable for a mod which had its release in 2005. Very early 2005. I wonder how many of these downloads come from 2008 or 2009?

Yes and no. GTA: SA unfortunately is very different in many ways from GTA 3 and GTA: VC, so a mod would still require coding knowledge to rewrite the engine and the entire system just to get the basics running. We could use the Blue system originally created for MTA 0.6/Blue, but the MTA: SA version is a different form of that. This is why I've been so badly bugging them to either update MTA for GTA 3/VC, or open-source it.

Hmm wouldn't it be possible to "mod" mta:sa to work with gta:III and gta:VC ?

Now that it is open source it should be possible no? I'm just thinking out loud here.

Really, this is basically the best solution. MTA:SA has mastered the design of the mod in terms of syncing, scripting and gameplay. It would require reworking of our game_sa layer in particular because that contains code specific to SA. game_sa is by no means a small module, so it would require specific attention and work to be successful

Well, CEGUI is using DX9 right?

VC and III is using DX8(.1).
