Some Crashing...

Ok, I've been reading around and trying new things with very little results.

I started with a clean installation of both GTA:VC and MTA v0.5. Once I ran the game, it gave me the fallowing error:

Multi Theft Auto 0.5 has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience.

After cruising about the Know Issues page, I found this helpful little tid-bit:

Crash on client startup

This might be causes by being unable to download the welcome message. This should only happen if the MTA site is down, or you aren't connected to the internet. If this is the case, it should try to download it for about 15 seconds - before it gives the crash. It might be possible to fix this by adding "DontGetLatest=1" on the second line of your "mta.ini" in your MTA folder (under "[Main]"). Alternatively, try creating a blank file called "mtaclientwelcome.dat" in your MTA folder - this is probably only relevant if this is the first time you've run the MTA 0.5 client.

I followed what it said and I added the "DontGetLatest=1" to my "mta.ini" file. Well, now I can start the client up just fine!

So, I browsed a list of servers 'til I found one that looked nice. It was running a VC map (not a GTA III map), but to my horrified surprise, every time I connected to a server, MTA 0.5 would crash with the same error as before. After further reading, it seems that both problems are one in the same.

I had my little brothers install GTA:VC and MTA 0.5 on their computers and everything worked without a hitch for them. My little brothers have identical computers. The only difference between my computer and theirs is that I have a dual core processor, a better graphics card, and I'm running on wireless. The only thing I can think of is that it has something to do with the fact that I am wireless and they are not.

Does someone know any fixes to this problem or am I right about the wireless thing, because I am completely confused as how to fix the problem...

Not sure what the cause is but it's definitely not your wireless networking.

Do you have a completely clean (unmodified) install of GTAVC?

Yes, it is a clean install of GTA:VC.

When exactly does it crash? Does the game load up at all?

It crashes as soon as I join as server (if it doesn't time out).

I doubt it has anything to do with my game because I don't even get that far. The MTA client crashes before I get to that part.

I'm not sure what could be the problem. Either there is something wrong with the MTA install, or maybe you have a firewall blocking you from connecting to servers. If you have a firewall or router, try disabling it and then connecting. If that fails, try uninstalling MTA (remove all traces of it, delete the folders it created) and installing it again.

Everytime I disable the firewall on my router, my internet ceases to work. I've tried to uninstall/reinstall GTA:VC and MTA 0.5 many times with no results. Besides, my little brother's computer is behind the same network and it works fine for them.

This sounds like a problem with your connection. I would first figure out why disabling the firewall stops your internet from working (maybe you're not really disabling it?), then try to connect without a firewall after you've solved it. Do a virus and spyware scan too.

hm this brings back memories of wireless zero config process that lagged me up (searches for available networks frequently but really you only need it to connect to one then it should just get disabled). I made a big post about that somewhere long ago.

I read this thread, having had the same problem the guy in the first post did. I modified the .ini file, and now i get to the server screen. There were no servers open, so I tried to create my own, and when A) I tried to Setup Server, it gave me an error audio sound, and when B) I tried to create the server it gave me the 'has encountered an error and needs to close.' message again. Help is appreciated
