Guest
Hi Forgive me if this is a duplicate, but I did have a look around and couldnt see this subject anywhere else so here I go. Catch-Up, me and my pals are forever playing races but usually one ends up getting ahead of the other and due to the nature of racing there's little chance of catching up. So is there a server command to allow a catch-up mode like you get in some racing games? You know so that if someone gets a bigger and bigger lead they start going slower and slower so people behind can catch up? Currently we've had a good few months making lots of maps and racing about but this problem is the only niggle. I'm not after anything fancy like team-play pedestrian slaughter kill frenzy mode with added model files. Just a simple modification so that if someone goes a capture point ahead they go 5% slower for example, get ten ahead and your at half speed. That way we can have a proper race without some mug getting in trouble cause he clipped a lamppost! Just my suggestion/question/pondering. Thanks! Link to comment
mintsz
problem with this could be, if say the race was the shape of a U | | | | |___| and unles they found some way to solve it using checkpoints, someone could be very far behind yet near the 1st position due to being across from eachother in the u shape. if this does come into action i suggest it is only an optional command because this could ruin some games such as deathmatch in cars, derbys, very smalll race maps where you go in a circle, etc... Nice idea though. Link to comment
orappa
Isn't it your own fault if you get left behind? Why should the leader be punished for that? Link to comment
Guest
Yeah, you'd be right there, I'm always lagging behind. The trouble is, there's literally no way of catching up if you fall behind, which means in the maps we've made [which are usually big ones with a couple of hundred checkpoints and can last a good half hour] it means a very very boring time for both the winner and loser. What's the point in winning if you win by the same margain of, say 30 seconds, that you had quarter of an hour ago. Yeah the winner could slow down but that's not the primal urge of your average racer. As for the shapes of the race, they usually weave in and out of the cities, countryside, water, up hills and all over the place. So there's no U shape to speak of All we're after is a server config switch to allow the server of such maps to allow catch up so that the race is constantly a case of neck and neck rather than, I tripped up one time and we're all bored until the next map. orappa
If it's weaving through cities, there's a chance that the leader may crash, allowing you to catch up. Link to comment
Guest
Learning to drive is not really an answer, I'm actually a fair driver, however I do get utterly sick of having to say 'oh I just hit a tree' so that I can save my pals pride as I slow down to let them catch up. If there was an option to allow catch-up then the further I got ahead the slower I'd go and the faster they would catch up. Then we'd be neck and neck and having a cool race rather than just another morose hammering. Isn't a cool and exciting race what we're all after? Link to comment
NazcaC2
Sorry, but personally, catch-up is dumb. It takes away the fun of being ahead, knowing that people are such a short distance behind no matter what. Link to comment
Guest
Well that sort of pwnage [is that how the kids spell it?] may be fun online but we're playing in the same room with each other here, so leaving someone in your dust would not only be boring but it'd be rude, we're supposed to be mates having a laugh not beating each other with skilz. That said I don't think I'd want to beat anyone, lan or online by a wide margain, where's the challenge or thrill? I like a fair and even fight and catch-up just evens things out. Link to comment
NazcaC2
The person ahead can always slow down and let the other player catch up. Problem solved. It doesn't sound like you're too concerned with finishing times so slowing down is the best solution. Link to comment
orappa
I don't think this will be implemented because it doesn't have mass appeal. Link to comment
Guest
Yeah it may not have mass appeal, yet, but it is far easier as an option to add-on that pretty much anything else. Some guys here are asking for MTA to be adapted into a MMORPG ?! That would takes months of programming for an alpha. A simple modifier to make the races more exciting by reducing the overall speed [acceleration and top speed] of anyone who's ahead of anyone else by 5% would take a day or two and would turn the races from a newbie beating whup-fest to an exciting racing game which would encourage new players rather than putting them off by being beaten conclusively in every race. It's not like it's complex maths, position one would be say 3 checkpoints ahead that's 15% slower, position two would be 2 points behind thats 10%, third place would be a checkpoint behind at 5% slower and fourth and last place would be running at normal speed. Which even a newbie could catch up. So it would make it exciting because it's neck and neck for the leaders and not disparaging for those lagging behind him as he CAN catch-up. This mod needs more players I think this would help! More people equals a bigger mod. Link to comment
