Phat Looser
It was 3 years ago, that I bought a Laptop for about 1200€. Its not good, but its still, well, kicking? First thing that happened is that due to me dragging that piece everywhere, parts of it started breaking. Nothing you can't fix with some glue. So I did that. The next thing is that I washed the keys of my keyboard - well, and was too stupid to sort them in the right way again. The third thing is that something on the mainboard overheated. I exchanged it. After that the small part where you insert the 14 V plug broke. Nothing you can't fix with some Copper and some soldering. The next year, nothing happened - except that the batteries broke - and yesterday, the soldering I made started to break and had a short circuit. So I repaired it again: This time I messed up and soldered a short-circuit myself. Well, tearing it apart again and repairing it again. After that, I managed to be idiot enough to NOT press the "on" button strong enough (its taking some force by now), and thought the 12V power supply was the wrong way round. (I was very, very tired while fixing it) Well, changing plus and minus resulted in an orange flash and some smoke. Weirdly enough, putting stuff the right way sort of fixed the problem. Whatever did the orange flash, it seems to be still working. I suppose its sort of a "short circuit diod" which should absorb the energy when short circuiting it.... I dunno, something maybe. Now I'm sitting here, tired and happy, posting with exactly that Zombie Laptop. Good night. Link to comment

Phat Looser
its the security diod which short-circuits as soon as you put the power on the wrong way round. I replaced it with a 10 ampere one, which may be bigger but is also less troublesome for me. Link to comment
