Own server = black screen

I must be some sort of gigantic newb, since everything I've found on the forums talks about stuff that doesn't seem complete enough to help me.

When I start my own server and connect to it, I get a black screen with a chat box.

Please tell me each and every step I must take to actually start playing (at least for racing).

step one: join your server as you did before

step two: start a gamemode (you can use /votemode)

thats all you have to do

or typ in serverconsole "gamemode " like this "gamemode assault as-dam" without quotes
