If you're using Windows XP, while in a folder, press tools, then find "Folder Options".

After that, click the view tab, and find "Hide Extensions For Known File Types". There you uncheck the box.

After you did it, you'll see the extensions of each files. Rename the file you need to change it to "meta.xml".

If you're using Windows Vista / 7, I'm not really sure but maybe the procedure is similar.
