Instead of for example: writing 'thank you' to birthday threads, you could just press thank you button Somebody proposes an idea? Like/dislike button Somebody makes useful resource for the community? Like button These buttons could be used in a lot of situations. Plus, this idea has been suggested more than once before and it never got implemented.
