Lag may be a result of bad connection (bad internet), or, due to many players being connected to the same server.

What the guy above has posted is true but also consider that some lag might be caused by the quality of your hardware. If for example you are playing on the highest graphic settings, why not try lowering them a little (this is obviously just the resolution but it could also be other settings which are affecting your game play). Try turning off any additional programs that are running in the background at the same time as MTA also.
